The number of Republicans willing to work across the aisle with Democrats is approximately the same as the number of Yankees fans who would be willing to cheer for the Red Sox.

Biden’s rhetoric frustrates me because it’s so naive and it’s like he forgot that the health care legislation, the big fucking deal was largely inspired by Republican policy and then made out to be Stalinism by the GOP.

It would have to be. Even considering the low chances of pulling something like that off without getting caught, most women obviously can’t conceive when they are on a period.
Additionally, the semen would not survive long enough to impregnate a woman anyway.

Conservatives for decades have been complaining about an “invasion” and making up crap about things like a North American Union and Atzlan being some shadowy group of people who want to kill Anglos/create an ethno-state/rejoin Mexico/whatever else.

I don’t ever recall conservatives not using the term “invasion” to refer to immigrants.

This is in preparation for Iran.

The warning they refer to
travel.state.gov

Talks about violence within Iraq itself.

Do not travel to Iraq due to terrorism, kidnapping, and armed conflict.

U.S. citizens in Iraq are at high risk for violence and kidnapping. Numerous terrorist and insurgent groups are active in Iraq and regularly attack both Iraqi security forces and civilians. Anti-U.S. sectarian militias may also threaten U.S. citizens and Western companies throughout Iraq. Attacks by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) occur in many areas of the country, including Baghdad.

[cut]

U.S. citizens should not travel through Iraq to Syria to engage in armed conflict, where they would face extreme personal risks (kidnapping, injury, or death) and legal risks (arrest, fines, and expulsion). The Kurdistan Regional Government stated that it will impose prison sentences of up to ten years on individuals who illegally cross the border. Additionally, fighting on behalf of, or supporting designated terrorist organizations, is a crime that can result in penalties, including prison time and large fines in the United States.

Dirigisme/corporatism is the doctrine that capitalism must be yoked to the needs of society/the state. It has a specific 19th century Catholic history to it, and that is why it was heavily associated with Catholic majority countries in the early and mid 20th Century. It also is a specific refutation of the nonsense that Nazis/fascists are socialists.

No.

Fascists are perfectly fine with making a lot of money and they went out of their way to make money. They believed that industry had to have a purpose that aligned with the goals of the state.

A friend of my daughter who teaches at Texas Tech had a student who blamed the Spanish-American War on “communist aggression.”

The twist is that we were the commies.

His reasoning (if we may call it that) was that the Cuban rebels were, of course, socialists resisting the God-ordained authority of the Spanish monarchy. Like all media overlords, Pulitzer and Hearst were also closet socialists as was Teddy Roosevelt. TR demonstrated this later when he became the first president to “interfere with business,” (with the Pure Food and Drug Act and his anti-trust activities.) When the time was right these conspirators arranged for the liberal agitator John “Black Jack” Pershing (known for his affinity for people of color) to dynamite the Maine in Havana, thereby inciting another war to advance the red flag of communism, which it eventually did.

I wish I were making this up. I was astounded at the pure audacity of this fabrication, but learned later that it is a fairly common view among Birchers.

Ayep. Unfortunate as we may think it, there is a large portion of the population who wants to believe that their wild-eyed brother/friend/neighbor/etc is just “misguided” and has been led astray by the pied-piper that is Donald Trump. And that, removed from his influence, they’ll return to being reasonable people who can be debated with one what’s best for America.

Because, as described above, what they would have to think of their friends/famly otherwise (and therefore what they would have to think of themselves) most people don’t want to contemplate.

How Is Awful Kid In Alaska Different From Coast Guard Terrorist Guy? (Wonkette)

Another day, another conservative busted planning mass-murder of Jews and Muslims.

In this case, the judge decided he was too dangerous to let out on pre-trial bail, even with GPS monitoring and such.

The FBI was tipped by people over his social media posts. The same day they were also tipped by Customs and Border Protection they’d intercepted a package with a selector switch to turn a Glock handgun into a fully automatic weapon.

A search of the apartment turned up 11 firearms and the two silencers, which like fully automatic weapons require a federal license. One of the silencers carried an image of a swastika and the secret neo-Nazi code “1488,” and isn’t THAT special, mister baby Nazi scum?

What we (unfortunately) have is a large percentage of voters who want to believe that if you just remove Trump, things will go “back to normal.” And that’s what the DNC leadership is trying to sell them on in this election, that if people who hate Trump just sweat it out for another 18 months, then Trump will be gone and we can return to “normal.”

91
DangerMan  May 15, 2019 • 12:32:45pm

re: #68 Targetpractice

I think it’s neither, but instead pure politics. Biden is gambling that there is a larger percentage of voters who just want “business as usual,” who can be convinced that things will go back to “normal” once Trump is gone and the GOP have been knocked back on their heels. And, if you look at the polls right now, it’s not that bad of a gamble.

Alabama Senate Votes to Virtually Eliminate Tourism to Alabama (Borowitz Report)

MONTGOMERY, Alabama (The Borowitz Report)—The Alabama Senate voted on Tuesday to approve a measure that would virtually eliminate tourism to Alabama.

Greg Reed, the Senate Majority Leader, said that, if signed into law, the measure would achieve his fellow Republican senators’ long-standing goal of making tourism to Alabama “so rare as to be essentially nonexistent.”

“This is a great day for everyone in the state of Alabama who has worked so hard to wipe out the evil scourge of tourism,” he said.

We’re well into a constitutional crisis, and the GOP in the Senate are more than willing to play dead for Trump so that the GOP can continue to pack the courts with their awful picks, Trump can sabotage functioning government, and Barr can rewrite the law by diktat so that the Constitution, the checks and balances, and oversight are meaningless.

Meanwhile, had any Democrat even so much considered a fraction of what Trump is doing, the GOP would be so far into impeachment that they’d already be at the Senate trial and voting on removal from office as I type.

Trump’s criminal conduct is breathtaking. Trump’s legal arguments claiming the right to engage in that criminal conduct without oversight/investigation by a co-equal branch, is even more stunning (and entirely predictable given that Barr’s history was all about expanding the role of the Executive and turning the Congress into a rubber stamp).

White House lawyers say it’s improper for Congress to investigate the president’s conduct when the Justice Department has already investigated him

- there is no double jeopardy to ‘investigation’
- until congress gets the entire report and supporting dox, it has no way to evaluate the investigation
- there is no prohibition about extending an investigation into areas/conduct it didnt cover (by choice or by scope limitations of the original order)
- p.s. - yesterday they said in court that congress virtually couldnt investigate the president for ‘criminal wrongdoing’ at all

Fort Worth seminary removes stained-glass honoring conservative Southern Baptist leaders

Stained-glass windows memorializing religious leaders who helped shift the Southern Baptist Convention to a more conservative stance were unveiled with great fanfare several years ago at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Last month, those colorful images depicting religious leaders ranging from televangelist Jerry Falwell to former Seminary President Paige Patterson quietly came down.

This came nearly a year after Patterson, one of the leaders of the so-called “conservative resurgence,” was fired for how he handled sexual assault allegations.

Two of those windows depicting Falwell and Jerry Vines, a former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, were displayed last week at a graduation ceremony for Liberty University, a private Christian university Falwell founded in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Falwell’s son, Jerry Falwell Jr., criticized the Fort Worth seminary’s decision to remove the windows from the MacGorman Chapel, saying the windows have now been “removed by the new regime,” according to the Baptist News Global. “Unfortunately, a new generation has taken the convention away from those values in many ways.”

Somebody there actually opened a Bible and found the part about idolatry.

Sounds like they’re taking in a lot of money if they can waste it on optional stained glass portraits.

The chapel they are part of cost $16 million a few years ago. There are 69 windows but I don’t know how many contained portraits.
Stained-glass windows honor leaders of Fort Worth seminary

Religious activist Frederick Clarkson denounced the display in uncompromising terms:
Portraits of Vanity in Stained Glass (December 29, 2013)

The chapel at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary is in the process of becoming a spectacle of nepotism, cronyism and ostentatious self-importance. This is the 12 year project of the wife of one of the leaders of the conservative take-over of the Southern Baptist Convention. It is her “dream” to memorialize dozens of SBC conservative faction leaders in stained glass in the chapel Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary. Dorothy Patterson, wife of current seminary President and erstwhile conservative insurgent, Paige Patterson, was recently featured in a front page story about her project in the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram.
Next year, the Pattersons will be among the first to be immortalized in a stained glass window together.

Clarkson has been exposing the religious right since the 70s and was the first to document the connection between fundy churches and armed militias (5 years before Oklahoma City).

today i would almost certainly ride around alabama. georgia’s getting problematic too

We aren’t going to return to normal. We shouldn’t return to normal. But we must return to a civic process that lets us continue the search for “better than normal”.

The first step is to stop the embrace of the awful.

I started to report RedState on that snitch line and gave up. The information they want is so dense and asked for in such unexpected ways that they must not want anyone to complete reports: Things like screen captures of what happened to you, links to what happened to you, etc. You know, the kinds of things you always capture at that moment in time or have access to once you are bounced from a site.

It’s just a front, a flashy equivalent of a big pile of empty sheets of paper stacked by the podium.

I don’t know much about Alabama, but my mom’s from rural Georgia, so we spent big chunks of summer there, and I went to school for four years in Atlanta. The people are unfailingly polite except for the occasional comment about my “yankee accent.” Why wouldn’t they be—I’m a white middle-class male who is also generally polite except for the occasional comment about Georgia accents. The black citizens in my grandparents’ county literally lived in tar-paper shacks and had to defer to them with “yes, ma’am” and “yes, sir.” Gosh I wish Stacy Abrams would run and win a Senate seat there.

Pine tar (the kind actually used) was quite common as a waterproofing agent and had a low melting point. It was meant to embarrass and shame the victim, not kill them which petroleum tar would.

The one question I asked every single person who supported the Iraq war was this: what is a win? What does it look like?

Not one person could answer that. The best they could do was sputter and try to change the subject. Then I asked the follow-up question: so why are we there? More sputter.

As much as Bolton loves war, my guess is that Trump will do whatever his handler tells him. The question is: does Putin want us to ignite a war in the Middle East? Trump likes bombing things but he doesn’t seem to have an appetite for a real conflict where American forces may actually die.

The reality is that a “win” is something we never seem to achieve, but simultaneously are “abandoning” if we should choose to withdraw our troops to end combat operations.

Exactly the line I’ve used on people who said we should have won Vietnam. They never can define what a “win” would have been. So, never get into a war where you can’t define what winning is, but you CAN define what losing is.

They did not FEEL or THINK that it was a massive tragedy in which 4,000 “babies” died.

Because they KNOW that an embryo has great worth as a potential person, but that it is not yet a person.

I’m starting to think that the only thing in the minds of the folks pushing us toward war with Iran is a need to push Iran’s face in the dirt for embarrassing in 1980. No thought of what comes after, just the need to strike back at someone who made us feel weak. Everything else is all rationalization around that core need.

The Israeli system allows a bazillion different political parties to participate and the party that wins a plurality, even if it is 23%, gets first chance to form a coalition with as many of the other parties as it takes to form a majority in the Knesset.

- naturally fertilized eggs are god’s will and so they count
- artificially fertilized eggs dont (at least not yet)

conversely

- natural miscarriages are (generally) god’s will
- any artificial means is not - (apparently god’s power does not extend to the decision or the process here)

I call “natural miscarriages” God’s miscarriages. Either that or “in His image” includes a reproductive system that aborts more than half of “babies.” Which, I guess, could be why there is only one God. 🤔

He’s pretty good. I think my favorite was the guy who won’t let his son eat vegetables.

“Davewater” made me throw up in my mouth.

Exactly and because Bibi and his allies won’t be hurt by Antisemitism either here or elsewhere they’re okay with looking the other way.

Every time I think maybe I should relax and stop being so averse to Bernie Sanders he (or a spokesperson) goes on the record with something that pisses me off all over again and reminds me I was fucking done with him already.

re: #308 Eric The Fruit Bat

Many corporations have a hard rule that certain key people on an air flight are not on the same flight - looks to me that was incredibly violated here. At a place where I used to work they lost so many employees on the same flight that crashed, they instituted this rule.

If Coca-Cola makes sure that the 2-3 people who know the formula are not on the same flight, then what the hell is this?

Inviting decapitation?
[tinfoil]Freudian slips before some sort of event which revolves around such a scenario?[/tinfoil]
